The Atlanta 2™
According to the WHO, over 55 million people in the world are currently living with dementia. And every year, there are 10 million new cases. Because of dementia’s impact on balance and coordination, patients experience a reduction in mobility. As a result, dementia patients spend long periods of their day sitting in a chair. Often, this will be a dining chair or a basic sitting room chair—but these chairs aren’t designed to support and care for the needs of the patients. They are uncomfortable and don’t keep the patient safe. In fact, they can actually worsen the patient’s symptoms. This is where the Atlanta 2 comes in.
For patients at risk of falls, and those with vigorous, involuntary movements, the Atlanta 2 has been clinically designed to provide a robust, durable and safe environment, reducing the risk of injuries and falls. The Atlanta 2 has been carefully crafted for safety and security and the very best in falls prevention. The Atlanta was one of the first chairs in the industry to receive a class 1A accreditation from the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) at the University of Stirling.
To showcase the benefits of the Atlanta 2, Seating Matters wanted to create a campaign, including a promotional video, to raise awareness of the importance of proper seating for those living with dementia, and to highlight the benefits proper seating can bring to both patients and their carers.
‘It’s Not a Chair’ asks people to reconsider what may seem like just a chair to them, from the perspective of someone living with dementia. Old age might not be something that we like to think about, but it’s a reality that can’t be ignored. We can’t predict what our later years will look like, but we like to think that we’ll be treated with care and respect. By giving patients better chairs, we’re giving them the dignity they deserve. This gives carers and families the peace of mind that we’re doing right by our patients and loved ones.
Video: It’s Not a Chair
‘It’s Not a Chair’ draws parallels between the vulnerability of a young child and a person living with dementia, asking us to think again about how seating can impact a person’s sense of comfort, safety and overall quality of life.
